Everyone says that the time to travel is in your twenties, but what ‘they’ don’t tell you is that traveling in your twenties is expensive. Unless you’re a trust fund baby, or come from a well off family, us college students don’t make, or have that much money. It may sound like it is next to impossible to travel the world and become enlightened, but it’s actually not entirely impossible. As a matter of fact, it's really easy, affordable, and plausible!
Recently, a family member of mine recommended the website, studentuniverse.com. This company is strictly dedicated to student travel. The website offers flights, hotels, and tours at discounted prices for students, which is a really amazing concept. At first, I thought it was too good to be true, but after reading review after review, I decided that it was legitimate.
Voted the “Best Youth Travel Agent” in 2015, by the Global Youth Travel Awards, truly raised my eyebrows. The website states that the company was founded in 2000 and has headquarters in Boston but also has offices in cities such as London, Toronto, New York and even in the Philippines. The company has contracts with over seventy different airlines, which is why the tickets are discounted to students.
Signing up for Student Universe is really simple; enter your email and the school you attend, and that’s it. There isn’t a fee to pay, you just have to be a student. But if you’re not a student and if you’re between the ages of 18 and 25 years old, you can still use the discounted ticket service.
I decided to look into the website even further. The website itself is very easy to navigate and allows you to compare the listed prices with the other airline websites. To my surprise, there truly was a difference in prices. Domestic flights, which are flights within the United States, were cheaper on Student Universe by almost one hundred dollars. I then decided to look into international flights and found flights discounted that were discounted by a few hundred dollars! (I actually purchased a roundtrip flight to New York for $80!)
Go travel for less.
