Adulting is Already Hard... Phone Carrier Shopping is Worse

Once a certain age is reached, things get real and even you know that it’s time.  The time to be a real adult, not just legally one.   The kind of adult that pays bills and actually has financial responsibility.  This time is scary; so much to figure out in so little time.  But have no fear, I’m right there with you and we can do this together!

 

 

Finding a phone carrier and phone plan that works for you. 

This is is the first step towards financially responsible adulthood that I decided to take.  After hours and hours of research, I composed a pretty solid list of things to look for and ask when it’s time to find a phone carrier and plan that works for you.   

 

#1.  HAVE AN OBJECTIVE:

(This is an example of my own personal objective)

Objective:  It’s time for me to be an adult and start paying my own bills while raising my credit score.  I need an individual, single-line plan.  I’m looking to spend $60 a month at the most. I do not want to have any unnecessary add-on fees every month.  I need a phone with long battery life, nice amount of storage because I am a writer (I need storage space for document apps and storage space for photos for website), current college student (needs storage space for apps for classes) avid traveler (needs long battery life to make it from Point A to Point B, storage space for photos, and good coverage to call my parents and grandfather).  I need a carrier plan that includes unlimited data, text, and minutes for calls.  Basically, I need a plan without having to sell my soul or have to give up a big chunk of my paycheck.

 

#2. KNOW WHAT PLAN YOU WANT/PRICE YOU WANT TO PAY:

-I want unlimited data, text, and calls.  

-What are the plans that you offer for this type of plan?

- Are there any in-store plans or online plans that would better benefit me?

-Do you have a start up fee?

-What are the add-on/hidden fees per month and how do I get rid of them?

-What is the monthly insurance fee?

-What does the monthly insurance fee intail?

-I work for the City of Chicago and I’m a student, what kind of discounts can I get?

-What is the contract length?

-What happens if the contract needs to be terminated early?

-Are there loyal customer benefits after a certain amount of time?

 

#3. FIND OUT ABOUT COVERAGE:

-What is the call quality and the statistics of calls being dropped?

-What is the coverage like in Chicago?

-I travel a lot, what is the coverage like in the rest of the US? The rest of the world?

 

#4. MAKE SURE YOU COVER THE MISCELLANEOUS QUESTIONS TOO:

-Can I keep my phone that I already have?

-If not, what are the prices to get a similar one/new one?

-Do you have any deals going on with (insert phone type here) in-store or online?

-Can I trade in my old phone for a discount?

 

#5.  MAKE SURE YOU READ THE FINE PRINT:

-This is a very boring but very important part of the process.  You want and need to make sure that you know exactly what you’re being charged for and why.
