House of Vans gives Chicago a free concert featuring Princess Nokia, JPEGMAFIA and Glitter Money

Roughly one hundred people waited in line for hours at the House of Vans to see Princess Nokia on Friday, June 8. The House of Vans event featured artists Glitter Moneyyy and JPEGMAFIA along with giving concert-goers free beer, cider and merchandise.

Chicago based femmes, Taylor Dariarow (TayyySlayyy) and Ashley Renee Clopton (Queen TrAshley) make up Glitter Moneyyy. With their songs “SCD” (suction cup dildo) and “Year of the Slut,” the two glitter queens had the crowd riled up and cheering.

According to their Facebook page, they’re the “Sexy, partying, equality demanding, champagne guzzling, politically pissed rap duo. Destroying the patriarchy one second at a time. Providing the party soundtrack while the world burns.”

Barrington DeVaughn Hendricks, better known as JPEGMAFIA, is originally from New York, lived in Japan and Germany, but calls Baltimore home these days. JPEGMAFIA was the second opening act and had the crowd in his hand by the time he walked on the stage.

Some of his more well-known songs are “Baby, I’m bleeding” and “Curb Stomp.”  The former Air Force veteran has released dozens of tracks on SoundCloud calls himself a “self-hating millennial,” according to his Twitter bio.

After a short break, Destiny Frasqueri, better known as Princess Nokia, took the stage. The crowd rushed toward the stage immediately upon her opening song, “Kitana.” This caused many folks in the crowd to get knocked down to the ground but others in the crowd were seen helping the people around them get back on their feet.

Princess Nokia made an announcement shortly after opening, thanking everyone for attending but reminding the House of Vans staff and security to be respectful because the event was for people of color, queer and femme folks. She then politely asked the men in the crowd to head toward the back of the crowd to give femmes space.

Princess Nokia sang some of her hit songs such as “Brujas,” “Look up, Kid” and “Tomboy.” She even sang her own rendition of Blink-182’s “I Miss You.”

Throughout her performance, the crowd was very respectful and receiving of Princess Nokia and she definitely brought the energy at the House of Vans.
